⚖️ What is Ideal Body Weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a range of weights associated with the lowest health risks for a given height and gender. It's important to note that ideal weight is a range, not a single number. The healthiest weight for you depends on factors like body composition, muscle mass, bone density, and overall health.

Different medical formulas exist for calculating ideal weight, each with its own purpose. Our calculator shows results from four major formulas so you can see the range.

📊 Ideal Weight Formulas

📏 Healthy BMI Weight Range

The World Health Organization defines a healthy BMI range as 18.5 to 24.9. For each height, this calculator shows the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI. This range is often preferred over single-number formulas because it accounts for individual differences in body composition.

💡 Factors That Affect Ideal Weight

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
The Devine formula is most commonly used in medical settings, especially for drug dosing calculations. However, the healthy BMI range (18.5-24.9) is often preferred for general health assessment.
Why do different formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed at different times using different populations. They use different base weights and adjustment factors. Showing multiple formulas gives you a realistic weight range rather than a single number.
What if I'm muscular - will the ideal weight still apply?
Ideal weight formulas don't account for muscle mass. Athletes and bodybuilders may have higher weights due to muscle, not fat. In these cases, body fat percentage is a better health indicator than weight alone.
How does age affect ideal weight?
As we age, muscle mass naturally decreases and body fat may increase. A slightly higher BMI (up to 27) may be acceptable for older adults. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
What about body frame size?
People with larger frames (wider wrists, broader shoulders) may have higher ideal weights. You can estimate frame size by measuring your wrist circumference. Our calculator uses medium frame as default.
Is ideal weight the same for all ethnicities?
Research suggests that some ethnic groups (e.g., Asian populations) may have higher health risks at lower BMIs. Some guidelines recommend lower BMI targets (23 rather than 25) for Asian individuals.
