📅 Understanding Leap Years

A leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365, with February 29 added. Leap years are necessary to keep our calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the Sun.

The Gregorian calendar, used by most countries, follows these rules:

📊 Leap Year Rules Explained

💡 Why We Need Leap Years

Earth orbits the sun in approximately 365.2422 days. Without adding an extra day every 4 years, our calendar would drift by about 1 day every 4 years (24 days per century). Over centuries, this would cause seasonal shifts - for example, summer would eventually occur in winter months.

The Gregorian calendar adjustment (excluding century years unless divisible by 400) keeps our calendar accurate to within 1 day every 3,300 years.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many leap years are in a century?
In a 100-year period, there are typically 24 leap years. However, century years divisible by 400 are leap years, so 2000-2099 has 25 leap years (including 2000), while 1900-1999 had 24 leap years.
What is the next leap year?
The next leap year after 2024 is 2028. Leap years occur every 4 years: 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, etc.
Why is year 2100 not a leap year?
The Gregorian calendar excludes century years from being leap years unless divisible by 400. 2100 is divisible by 100 but not by 400, so it has only 365 days.
How many days are between year 2000 and 2024?
The calculation includes all days from Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 31, 2023 (or based on your selection). Our calculator accounts for all leap years in the range automatically.
What is the difference between Julian and Gregorian calendar?
The Julian calendar added a leap day every 4 years without exception, causing overcorrection. The Gregorian calendar (introduced in 1582) refined the rule to exclude century years not divisible by 400, which is more accurate.
